A Matter of Wardrobes

When you want to get a job, it's important to dress for it. If you're looking for a job as a department store Santa Claus, for example, you don't show up in a frog-man suit. If you're applying to work as a cook, you don't arrive in the dirtiest clothes you can find. If the place that you want to hire you has a dress code, you might want to honor it or look for another job. It's just common sense, isn't it?

So why are to Muslim women pitching a fit because they can't get a job at a fast food restaurant? The restaurant expects their employees to wear a uniform (which doesn't include the headgear).

Simple solution? Lose the headgear or look for a job someplace else. Unless you're a Muslim, of course. It's not like they came here and started trying to change their new country into the old one... oh, right. That's exactly how it is, folks! When Muslim immigrants don't like the way we do things or our business policies or how we celebrate our own holidays, they go bananas and start demanding changes to suit them.

And what do we do? Cave in. Let them have their way because we don't want anyone to think we're holding 9/11 against all Muslims. They're getting free passes all over the world, for goodness sakes. Somewhere along the line, we need to put a stop to it or just convert to Islam and get it over with.

I'm hoping that McDonalds will stand up to the pressure and hold onto their policy of wearing the uniform. We'll see what happens. Somehow it's really gonna irk me if I have to wait in the drivethrough while McDonalds employees tend to their prayers instead of getting my Big Mac and fries!

Hey S.L. when in Rome do as the Romans. When someone hires you to do a job you follow their rules, or look for another job as you said.

They're suing McDonalds and the manager for $10million! Disgusting as it is, they'll probably win, too. Now if an employee in some stores dares to wear a cross necklace and gets fired, they have no recourse. It's beginning to really tick me off, Lester!

Maybe they won't win. Equal Emplooyment law requires that ALL employees are treated the same. So, if they cave, they will have to remove the requirement for uniforms...not sure they'd do that. If they did win, the uniformed employees could file suit. It is pretty pathetic though. I work in EEO and I get very frustrated with these types of issues. Great post!

Thanks Cathy! It's amazing how far some businesses (and schools, etc) will go to cater to Muslim demands. Prayer rooms (in schools where Christians are not allowed to pray, ever), footbaths and prayer rooms at sports arenas, seperate classes in some schools because boys and girls aren't supposed to be together, seperate eating places and menu's in some colleges, the list goes on and on and on.

Even French movie icon Bridgette Bardot was sued (and lost) for complaining about Muslims trying to take over France!

Hi S.L
I agree with you on certain aspects of your article. If I wanted to wear something that wasn't part of the uniform, I would be told to just wear the uniform and the fact that their uniform is a policy renders me incapable of taking legal action against them.

I have nothing against Muslims, but as an atheist I believe that someone cannot dictate society purely from a belief based of faith.

However most of their choice in clothing is actually embedded into their cultures. We need to respect that, don't we? Isn't America 'the land of the free'? How would you feel if due to circumstances beyond your control you ended up in a predominantly Muslim country, and to get certain jobs you needed to wear the Burka (thats what I think you refered to as 'headgear') You would feel entitled to your right to wear what you choose to.

Coming from Australia, we live in a hugely multicultural society, and I think that the Burka is more than just 'headgear' to them, its a fundamental part of their beliefs.

But at the same time, the world is being consumed by political correctness and it ironically is overshadowing EQUALITY. I agree with you on that, but your argument reaks of bias against Muslims. However, I don't know exactly what the Burka means to Muslims as i really don't know any personally, and perhaps if we were to understand that maybe our treatment of this issue would change.

It does seem that people take advantage of the law too often in America, and its not right, and if these people seriously are suing purely of financial interest then that is a different issue and is disgusting.

S.L. maybe McDonald's should split the restaurant into two sections like they did for smoking and non-smoking, one for Muslims, and the other for infidels, and let the Muslims serve the Muslims, and the infidels serve the infidels.

But the best answer would be do as I say or find another job.

Hi Jake! Thanks for stopping by. I'm sorry if you think I'm biased... well, maybe I am, just a little. I didn't move to their country and demand that they change their laws to accommodate Christianity. There are plenty of businesses that hire people in "headgear", burkhas, turbins, etc. Those women could have gone to any one of those places for a job (they don't live in a small town, by the way and McDonalds wasn't the only job available, I'm sure). It may not always be the case, but I honestly believe that too often people apply for jobs just because they know they won't be hired so they can sue for millions and in our litigious society these days, the suits usually work. Maybe they think that suing is easier than actually working for a living. It's definitely more profitable!

Hi Lester! I've heard of restaurants that do just that. Half the place for Muslims and half for everyone else. If it works for them, that's fine. But I'll bet most of them did so due to political pressure or the fear of lawsuits, not for any other reason. It's disgraceful!
