Another Ugly Surprise
July 4th 2009 13:52
My friend Jerry, from whom I'm buying my house, came over today. Usually it's his wife, Twylah who comes to collect the payments. Jerry just had one of his legs amputated and is having trouble adjusting to the prosthesis. They're both in their eighties, by the way.
I handed Jerry the check, made out to Twylah, as I always do, and he said I needed to put it in his name instead, since Twylah died last Sunday. I almost keeled over with shock.
What is wrong with people? I lost two friends last Sunday and neither one would allow a funeral or memorial service. The first friend, Joan, at least allowed people to be notified that she had died. Twylah didn't even permit that. She wanted it kept a secret for some sadistic reason. If there is anyone that matters to you, please give them the opportunity to say good bye if you die. Or just take a baseball bat and smack them in the knees (that's a lot nicer than forcing people who care about you to swallow their grief and allow the open wound to last for the rest of their lives). I have nothing but contempt for that kind of cruelty.
Funerals are for the LIVING! How anyone can be that cold, cruel and selfish as their last act in this world just boggles me.
Good bye Twylah. In spite of your best efforts, you won't be forgotten. So there!
