I am highly opinionated with a firm grip on the difference between right and wrong. I pay more attention to the candidates and the issues than to precise party lines. My facts are just that... FACTS- and my opinions are MY opinions- Regardless of what the subject, you can always find a good read on my blog, I write about various issues and not everything is focused on the subject of politics. I hope you enjoy!

Hostage Situations

August 1st 2007 13:36
Apparently the Taliban are as kind, gentle, peaceful, etc. as the rest of the terrorists. Not that anyone ever had a better opinion of them! Now they have taken South Korean hostages, two of whom they have already killed. What will happen next...?

Concerning the taking of hostages for any purpose... It only works if someone in charge is willing to negotiate and acceed to the criminals demands. That's a very slippery slope, as they say, folks. Maybe you can save some hostages by giving in to demands (whether that be money or the releasing of other criminals). Maybe. But by doing so, you open the doors for the same thing to keep happening. Even people as stupid as terrorists won't keep trying to do something that always fails. As much as I'd like to see the hostages freed, I hope the demands of the Taliban will not be met.

Maybe I'm just a very stubborn old broad, but it seems to me that a little "fighting fire with fire" might be in order. Suppose that while the Taliban are making their threats and ultimatums, we return the favor. All the terrorists that they expect to have freed from jail in exchange for the hostages could be collected in one place and shown on camera. If a hostage is killed or injured, we could do the same to one of theirs. And show it on TV for everyone to see. If that makes you feel a little squeamish, folks, remember what they do to our people when given the opportunity. They don't hesitate to film beheadings! You might also bear in mind that we have some terrific special effects experts...

Undoubtedly, someone will say that responding in kind will only escalate the problem. Really? And making nice is working so well....

Interesting idea, SL, but what are those Koreans doing there in the first place? Remember Loney and his Christian crowd in Iraq? The American was the only one killed and Lonely and the other three were rescued by the Brits who had much better things to do at the time. The Koreans hit me as being in the same misguided frame of mind. As for Loney, he still has not thanked his rescuers and refuses to wear a poppy on Remembrance Day. What a dick!Maybe if the Koreans refuse to negotiate, some other well meaning do gooders will stay away from where their not wanted or needed.

I wondered about that, too. Faith and beliefs are good things, but a little misguided when they take you into a war zone and get you kidnapped! Since I hadn't heard why they were there, I decided not to comment on that part. But I agree that when anyone puts themself in harms way, they shouldn't be surprised when the worst happens. I hope the S. Koreans refuse to negotiate, too.
