Girl Scouts Are More Than Just Cookies
July 1st 2008 19:06
I gotta tell ya, I love "Thin Mints!" They're my favorite Girl Scout Cookie. The others are good, make no mistake, but those Thin Mints turn me into an instant porker who can't put the box down til they're all gone! That pretty much covers everything I know about Girl Scouts.
Today I got a notice about the new Girl Scout agenda and found it surprising. The only Scouts I have known were Eagle Scouts (boys) and that's been some years ago. Of course, I've also heard all the controversies about gay scout leaders and the Scouts being a "private organization" who could choose their members. But it's been awhile since that was in the news, too. And as I recall, it was mostly the Boy Scouts who were being ripped.
The article I found today had to do with the "feminization" of the Girl Scouts. Not to say that they weren't feminine to start with, afer all, they're girls. They're supposed to be feminine. But we're talking "feminists" here, folks. Left wing feminists, at that. I wasn't aware that they removed "God" from their pledge back in 1995, were you? What's next, badges for attending Glo-bull Whatever" rallies? How about abortion badges?
I understand that the role of women (Girl Scouts and Girl Guides, too) changed over the years to include service during both World Wars. Young women being trained to be strong and efficient and contribute to society is a good thing (as well as what the G.S. founder had in mind). But it bothers me that they have turned some corners away from their original goals and have adopted the ways of the far left. The last I heard, the Boy Scouts were clinging tightly to their history and traditions. Now it seems that the Girl Scouts are doing the opposite.
Neither my daughter no my grand daughter were Girl Scouts. Nor was I. So maybe I have no stake in this discussion. But it bothers me, nonetheless that an old and honored group like the scouts is being turned away from their roots and toward a nebulous future that doesn't include the things it used to...

If you'll pardon the bias of a proud dad whose youngest daughter was recently awarded GS's equal to the Boy Scouts' Eagle Scout Award, I'd like to offer some reassurances that the Lefty's haven't taken over Girl Scouts.
KImberly won her award for painting the kids area in our local hospital's ER in a way to make it "kid friendly." She got the idea after being taken to the ER following an accident my wife got into with both of our girls.
Kim received her award in a ceremony full of what you'd expect during either a Boy or Girl Scouts' meeting; Presentation of the Colors; Pledge of Allegiance -- with mention of God (with nobody fainting in MA, no less!) and a really wonderful family-style celebration in one of Springfield's major hotels. Her district covers all of western Massachusetts, including the very large Worcester County area.
So -- there you go -- some good news and from the People's Republik of Taxachusetts, of all places. There's always hope for the Okies from Muskogee -- even if some of them come from a litttle colonial town in MA called Hadley.
