Re-educating Dad
January 5th 2009 08:27
I had dinner with my father-in-law last night. He's slowly but surely beginning to learn the truth about politics. But every now and then he surprises me! Some of the silly, crack-pot liberal ideas he brings up are amazing. I was explaining to him last night, for example, that almost one third of all Americn hospitals will be closing when B.O. (B.S.) passes his evil law that makes it manditory for all doctors and hospitals to murder children.
On the one hand, Dad knows it's wrong to kill innocent, helpless babies. He's pro-life. On the other hand he has the idea that a government can successfully engage in "population control" with no bad results. So I explained to him about communist China and their badly failed "one child per family" law. After killing a couple of generations of female babies, they now find themselves with a shortage of women to produce the all-important male babies. Odd how the "feminists" don't seem to have much to say on the subject, isn't it? But he seemed to think that limiting the number of children a family could have would be a good thing. Tomorrow I'll explain (ala Walter E. Williams) why Dad's Social Security isn't as stable as he thinks. (And what it has to do with people having fewer children... the old "Zero Population Growth" garbage).
Dad refused to get cable TV when the local (and only) cable company jerked him around. He does have movies to watch, books to read and a pretty good radio for information and entertainment. He listens to Rush a couple of times a week and Tom Sullivan almost every day, so his political education is progressing. It isn't easy for him to see that the party he always trusted has betrayed him at every turn. But now that he listens to the news and can get answers to his questions, he's coming around nicely.
He reminds me of my mother... She had been a life long Democrat, but voted Republican in her last election. In fact, she was a big fan of John McCain (back in 2000). It's interesting to watch the changes as long time Democrats begin to understand what liberalism really is and how much damage it does. At first they deny it, stubbornly insisting that their party isn't like that. It's all Republican lies! But when you explain all the Democrat ideas that have failed miserably, and when you have them check out the Democrat platform for themselves, their denial turns to horror and disgust. They start paying attention to what politicians say, word for word, instead of just allowing themselves be "inspired" by meaningless chatter and empty rhetoric. They stop voting along party lines when they understand where those lines are really drawn. It's a beautiful thing to see!
