A Pill for Everything...

One of societies biggest problems is the "quick fix" solution. My foster mother is a fine lady and I love her dearly. But when her kids (and later grandkids) were young, she always had a pocketful of candies. She would give them to the little ones for a variety of reasons. If two were fighting, she gave them each one piece and called them "friendly pills". If a child was sad, she handed out another candy and called it a "happy pill." She had a sugar coated goodie for everything. As her children grew up, they expected there to be a pill for every eventuality. Her kids are now grandparents who either use legal drugs or illegal ones, still looking for the "happy pills" they got as children. I'm not blaming her for all of the societal problems, but her solution was certainly common at the time and did help to create the atmosphere of "quick fixes" that plague us to this day.
Think about it, folks. Whatever you want or need is usually available, isn't it? If you need to go somewhere, you have a car to get you there (or public transportation). If you're hungry, there are plenty of stores and restaurants close at hand if you can afford them, if not, there are soup kitchens, food stamps and free food give-aways in every city and most towns. If you're bored, you have TV and radio to entertain you. If you get sick, there's a doctor or hospital close at hand to prescribe their own version of "happy pills" whether you need them or not. If you don't like the idea of going to school or getting a job, there's Welfare to support you. If you choose to sleep around there's a nice "Hitman M.D." to get rid of any child you don't want to bother with. If you catch what used to be called a "social disease" there are plenty of drugs to cure it... well except for AIDS, of course. There just isn't a quick fix for that one. But undoubtedly there will be, one day.
Maybe we should develop a little patience, folks. And work on the "responsibility thing" a little more. We're becoming so lazy and demanding that our excesses are more important to us than anything else. There don't seem to be any consequences for anything these days. Our society (all over the world, not just the US) is going into a decline and nobody seems willing to do anything about it.
There was a time when people were accountable for their actions. Nowadays, if a child misbehaves, they're given drugs and diagnosed with A.D.D. so they get away with whatever they want to do. Growing up without being responsible for their behavior has created a generation of people who have the excuse of A.D.H.D. or "Bi-polar Disorder" or several other "ills" that are nothing more than flimsy excuses for being jerks. One man I know (now in his mid-thirties) has beaten and choked women (starting with his own mother) and never served an hour in jail. He goes to a "therapist" and has the excuse of being "mentally ill" for anything he wants to do. Someday he'll kill someone and his "shrink" will be soooo surprised. The cops will be, too, I'm sure... especially since they could have done something to have him put away before he could commit murder.
A friend of mine assumes that everyone who behaves badly must be sick. It hasn't yet occured to her that some people are just jerks who keep getting away with things because they claim one form of illness or another as their excuse.
As long as we keep making excuses for irresponsible behavior and providing "quick fixes" for every problem without treating the root cause, it will keep getting worse.
