Swimmingly Sunday!
July 20th 2008 15:32
Since I'm so fond of swimming, it's a wonder I don't have a pool of my own! But it's a little like chocolate cake, I guess. Really great as a treat but not for everyday enjoyment. Besides, at my age, looking like a prune is something of a given and I don't need pool water to hasten it along!
Bet you're wondering how I can mix swimming with politics, aren't ya?
Here goes... I love to swim, but as I said earlier, I want to keep it special. Like a good conservative, I don't mind waiting for something I want. Patience is a wonderful thing and comes with its own rewards. Like waiting until marriage to have sex, or not drinking until after the 21st birthday, or saving for the first home and not expecting the government to provide you with one. These things (and many others) are not meant to be objects of instant gratification. The "If it feels good, do it" generation was wrong. "It'll feel better when you earn it" would have been a much better motto. The former is clearly liberal in nature and the latter is, obviously, conservative. Planning and anticipation are more than half the fun!
Working for something you want or need causes you to take better care of it than if it's just handed to you, free. I have a friend who personifies this idea. He has had a string of cars over the years. All of them given to him. He didn't work for them, save for them or earn them, so taking care of them is low on his list of priorities. He forgets to check the oil and water, air the tires or even clean the cars he has. One day, surprise! They fall apart and he waits for someone else to give him another one. Which someone always does... Don't misunderstand, folks. He's a very dear friend of mine and I'm not really criticizing him. It's just the way he was raised and I'm as guilty as anyone where he's concerned. I bought him a car once, too. It lasted just a few months before he blew the engine up. He has a college education (that he's still paying for) and he pays his rent and other obligations, including insurance for the vehicles he otherwise doesn't take care of. In his defense, he isn't very interested in material things and might not even fuss with a car he had to pay for... Did I mention that he's a liberal? He is!
Another friend of mine is third generation welfare. Her father died when she was young and her mother had no marketable skills. The same thing had happened when her mother was a child. This girl literally grew up on the streets (sometimes homeless!) and in rat infested apartments they could afford. She had almost no education, since the school system was more interested in teaching her to be a good liberal than in preparing her for a future of her own. It was sort of expected that she would start having babies at an early age and continue the "family tradition" of welfare and liberalism. She seemed very liberal and a devoted Democrat when she grew up. Then she did something amazing and actually got a job! No marriage, no babies (and no, she isn't a lesbian!), no drugs for her. She has been with the same company all her working life (almost 10 years) and is in line for a management position. She supports her mother, pays all the bills and has a very good life. All by her own efforts and determination. After living in the real world for awhile, her politics magically changed and she is very conservative now. She's a registered Republican! With her help, her mother is beginning to pay attention as well and will NOT be voting for Obama.
See, I can even turn something like swimming into a political diatribe!
I'm on my way to church now, and then to jump in the pool. Maybe some of you would rather I jumped in a lake...? LOL

Round Politics
Both my sons are republicans, they don't like the democratic party because of their anti gun agenda, and the abortion issues. They are not old enough to vote yet, but soon.

we had a pool once and they are so much work to maintain!
theres these little bugs they have in Western Australia called slaters, and every morning the bottom of the pool would be covered with them and leaves and dusts and other insects lined the surface . . . i think if you are gunna have a pool you really need to invest in a pool cover and/or spunky pool man to clean it for you! haha
