Ah, Holiday Weekends!
July 6th 2008 15:58
I didn't have the time to write much yesterday. Had to take care of some family business and spend some time with my father-in-law. He's an independent old goat who simply vanishes for years at a time and then pops up again. He's almost 80 now and getting around a little more slowly than in years gone by. In the years since we last saw him, he's gotten a little sideways on politics. Started buying into the crappola he hears on TV. It's gonna take some time to get him to start thinking again! But I'll give it my best efforts, rest assureed.
Today is another family day and will be spent at church and then at the lake, getting properly sunburned. We're considering another move and need to give it more thought. Wish my husband was home to be involved in the discussions, but whatever I decide to do will be fine with him. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate moving?!!
Tomorrow I'll have plenty to say about the latest liberal foolishness, I'm sure. But for now a little swimming, relaxing, eating and contemplation are in order. Have a great day all!

BUT -- moving from one town to another in "happy valley" of western Mass. was a killer, esp. since I had to play paterfamilias. And there's no fun in moving and leaving a home that'd been in your wife's family for four generations due to rising taxes (of course at the behest of the artsyfartsy crowd that could always afford them.) When you can't justify jacking up the upstairs rent year after year and the quality of prospective tenants dwindles -- not to mention the sizes and ages of your children getting higher in basically an apartment with one bathroom -- and you can find a place with five bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms on .75 acres for less than you're selling the old homestead, you have to pull out the old crying towel for a while and join up with the Joads, pile up the goods and in our case -- like the Joads -- head west, albeit only for one town away.
But there's a gnawing "ex-pat" feeling we never can get out of our system whenever we head into our old town of Amherst. We feel robbed, cheated and pushed out; all by the same kind of people who are doing the same thing to my wife's job as a town school cafeteria worker -- not costing taxpayers much in the first place -- and pushing her out into the wonderful world of outsourced privatized workers at the same pay with lesser benefits. So professors so and so can have tax breaks they won't extend to others.
Our next move is you guessed it: A not so little state to the north of us -- and damn sure not New Hamsphire.
Take care of your father in law first, and don't bring the TV if that's giving you fits. Just take your husband, your good sense of humor, a few bags and head on out then.
But I can safely trust you're not thinking of moving to Berkeley, right?

The Political Brief
If we relocate to take care of Dad, I'll find ways to pry him loose from the TV as often as possible! I'll also give him a copy of my latest book so he can learn what conservative politics are all about these days. So far he's only reading one of my murder mysteries. Leaving Nevada won't be easy, we've been here a long time. But I'm familiar enough with CA. it won't be too difficult to get back in the rut. (except politically, of course!) And I spend a lot of time there lately, anyway.
I sympathize about your reasons for having to move. It's never easy. I wind up doing it once (and sometimes twice) a year. Ugh....

Round Politics
I had to move away sometime ago to find work, I missed my home so much and when I had the chance to move back here I took it.
I love the mountains, and all it's beauty, and all the freedoms I have. I live on 200 acre farm that my Grandmother and father bought back in the 20's.
So live on 200 acres and play on 2000 acres, my kids and I love riding 4 wheelers, and hunting, and shooting sports. Sorry S.L. for getting carried away I just love this place.
