The Myanmar Tragedy
May 7th 2008 17:29
It's hard for me to imagine 22,000 people, much less a disaster that kills that many. Most of the towns I've lived in didn't have 25% of that population!
I know there are some who will say it was caused by Glo-bull Warming/Cooling/Climate Change or whatever. Let's think about this for a time, shall we, folks? There have been storms as long as there's been Earth. Why do some of them claim so many lives these days? Are the storms really worse? Or are the affected populations simply in the wrong place at the wrong time? Do some governments not care about their people? Duh!
The people of Myanmar have few of the luxuries that the rest of us take for granted. They don't have TV's or radios (the poor, at least) and tend to live in less than adequate housing in the cheaper areas (mostly low-lying coastal places). Hurricanes and tsunamis hit the very areas the poor call home. Weather information is available to those with communications capabilities, but not to those who don't have them. The Myanmar government (such as it is) could put sirens out and set them to screaming when a really bad storm approaches, if they were interested in protecting their people. But they haven't done that yet. They could have an Emergency Response Department to insure the evacuation of people in harms way. But they don't. You'd think Ray Nagin and Kathleen Brown were in charge, wouldn't you?
Even in the USA, we can be damaged by Mother Nature and her quirks. Especially when those in charge of getting folks to safety don't do their jobs. All the deaths in New Orleans can (and should) be laid at the feet of the mayor and the governor (as well as all the previous Louisiana politicians who spent the levee money on other things instead of doing what was necessary to protect the city.) Good liberal Democrats, all, by the way.
The Myanmar tragedy is a terrible thing, indeed. But it wasn't caused by Glo-bull anything, except maybe the Glo-bull political notion that politicians don't have to be accountable for the damage they do.

Stop being so silly and use your brain for a change. Gore is not your savior, he just wants praise, glory and money. Those things that foolish people keep on handing to him. The temp rose half a degree and then stopped in '98. It's a natural phenomenon.
