Psyber, Psycho Stalkers...
February 7th 2008 23:41
I found out something scary today. There is a group (maybe more than one) who seem to find each other in the old "birds of a feather" tradition. They all have an "ex" they want to stalk and each of them helps the others in their sick quest to make someone else miserable. The biggest problem (for decent people) and the biggest advantage (for lunatics) with the internet is the anonymity factor. That's what feeds and enables the psycho, psyber stalkers.
They get together and agree to help with doing as much damage as they can to people they don't even know. For example, Mr. X wants to stalk his former wife, but she has a restraining order against him and he can't go near her. So he finds out that she's using the internet to meet people and creates a "character" on the website she uses. Maybe he creates two or three... Then he starts chatting with her and they become psyber-friends. If she wants to meet him in person and get acquainted, he calls on another stalker to meet her and pretend to be the character he created. She meets him and is none the wiser. Both women and men are involved in this disgusting charade and there's no way of knowing how many unsolved crimes were perpetrated via this charming device.
Imagine meeting some that seems to have a lot in common with you, talking for weeks or months on the internet and then meeting that person face to face. You don't know that it isn't the person you have been chatting with all that time. You seem to hit it off even better face to face and arrange to meet again for a late supper and a movie. When you arrive at the dark parking lot beside the restaurant, expecting to find the friend you have been getting acquainted with for months. Instead, there's the person against whom you have a restraining order. The person who has beaten, abused ot mistreated you in the past! He has a gun...
This seems to be a new fad, folks. With the anonymity of the internet, they can get away with almost anything. These psychos alibi each other, cover for one another, and help in setting up the victims. Scary, isn't it?
If Algore really did invent the internet (which he didn't) he should be sued by every victim of internet stalking. Our laws were meant to protect the citizens, but they haven't yet cauht up to the very real threats the use of the WWW can cause.
If you doubt that people can get away with whatever they like under the cloak of anonymity, just read my blog for the past couple of months. "Anonymous" can say whatever it wants and get away with it. It's like a free pass for those who are badly twisted and too cowardly to use their own names.

The internet can be a lot of fun and a very useful tool for honest people. But the predators find ways to make it dangerous...

I have to agree that this is a scary stuff, sick turn for what is perhaps the greatest invention since the wheel.
If I was single, I don't think I would ever use the internet to find a date, not these days.
Interesting post SL, it kind of proves that any system invented can be abused... and probably will be. I wish the world would get over it and get on with it... will we ever have peace?
