Horses of Courses

A few days ago, someone asked Hillary Clinton which horse she was expecting to win the Kentucky Derby. Naturally, she did the feminist thing and chose Eight Bells (the only filly in the race). She made it clear that it was the horse's gender that inspired her choice. Big Brown was the favorite, by far. He had a winning (but brief) track record and was the logical selection for anyone who was betting.
In case you didn't see the race, folks (I must admit that I didn't get to watch it, either), but it was a blow out for Big Brown. He took an early lead and won with room to spare. Poor little Eight Bells shattered both front ankles early in the race and was euthanized as soon as the race was over. Unlike Barbaro, her injuries were too severe to attempt to save her.
I'm a horse lover, folks. Over the years I've owned several of them. So don't think I'm taking lightly the loss of a beautiful animal. My point is that backing a contender simply because of gender isn't very smart. I'm sure Barak Obama would have chosen the blackest horse in the race, just to keep "solidarity" with Rev. Wright. That wouldn't have done him any good, either. The winning horse, Big Brown, was simply better at what he did.
Think of the coming election in the same terms, folks. What should be the main consideration in voting for a president? Sex? Color? Or being the best at what the candidate does? This year's Kentucky Derby might be a good object lesson. Ya think?
