The Reality of Hope
February 21st 2008 12:04
Rush was talking yesterday about "hope" and whether or not it's a good thing. As with many aspects of life, hope can be both a positive and negative force. Think about it...
One who is "hopeless" is in despair. One who is "hopeful" is optimistic. Obvious, right? But how about the other uses of the term "hope"? When writing letters, many people close them with something like "Hope to hear from you soon," or "Hope this finds you well." Those expressions of hope are simple and rather generic.
When all your efforts have been aimed at a goal and the end result isn't coming soon, hope can sustain your sanity! If you're waiting for something that's beyond your control, hope may be all you have.
What sort of "hope" does Barak Obama have in mind when he wears the word out? He "hopes" to get enough votes to win the election, true. But what "hope" is he referring to when he gives his charismatic speeches around the country? He keeps saying he's the candidate of "hope" but what does he mean? Hope, Arkansas?
It seems that some people replace ambition and thought with catch words like "hope." Obama gets standing ovations for doing it every day. Is the "hope" he's talking about the kind you have after exhausting all your efforts and are awaiting the results? Or is it the sort of hope that replaces the need to expend any effort? Sitting around and "hoping" for something to happen won't usually make it so.
Promoting unspecified "hope for the future" seems to be very popular with voters these days. It keeps Obama from having to detail any plans for "change" while he's inspiring the throngs.
