I am highly opinionated with a firm grip on the difference between right and wrong. I pay more attention to the candidates and the issues than to precise party lines. My facts are just that... FACTS- and my opinions are MY opinions- Regardless of what the subject, you can always find a good read on my blog, I write about various issues and not everything is focused on the subject of politics. Did Someone Mention Jobs?

February 21st 2010 05:18
My husband had to change cell phone service companies last week. The old company didn't cover all the places he goes and the roaming minutes apparently got to be too much for them. So I called around to find another provider that covers more places and maybe costs less. After a good deal of time, I realized that nothing local would work for his needs. So I called AT&T and it was a nightmare.

After waiting for an inordinate amount of time, I finally got an English-impaired operator. She didn't quite understand what I wanted, so I patiently explained it to her... several times. All I wanted to know was if AT&T had towers in the states he drives through regularly. She told me I had to have zip codes! Right, I'll just give her all the zip codes for ten different states. No problem! So I asked her to check and see if they had service coverage, generally, in those states. Then I got to list them. Kansas... after a long pause, she said "Yes." Iowa... she asked how to spell it. I O W A ... she asked what state Iowa was in. That's how it went, but almost an hour later, it was determined that he would have coverage. But I couldn't get it for him because AT&T doesn't recognize my home zip code! Ultimately, I was connected with an American operator and got everything straightened out. He'll have to find one of their stores, but it's half the price of Sprint.

When everyone is griping like crazy about our lack of jobs, why don't we stop this "outsourcing" insanity and give the work to people who at least speak the language and know that Iowa is a state? It isn't rocket science or brain surgery for crying out loud. It's a minimum wage job. What, we can't afford to pay our own people minimum wage?

Here's an "outsourcing" situation that works! There's a company, based in Panama who hires people from the countries in question to provide virtual paralegal services. The paralegals actually speak the same language as their clients, know the local, state and federal laws, and get paid in American money. The money, of course, is both earned and spent in the USA. Novel approach, isn't it? The company is called Summit LegalWeb you can learn more about them at www.summitlegalweb.com

Speaking of jobs and money, I watched Huckabee tonight. His guest was Michelle Obama. She's all excited about her new crusade to get kids healthier. She said it was the job of parents, schools, counselors and congress to make sure our kids eat right. Congress? Does anyone else hear a warning bell going off?

She's getting 400 million dollars to get supermarkets to move to places where there are none. Aren't stores in business to make a profit? If there was a demand for fresh produce, etc. in an area, wouldn't Safeway or Raley's or someone have put a market there? So she wants to dump 400 MILLION DOLLARS to build stores and "employ locals" to run them. Really? How about if the areas in question were business friendly and charged lower taxes? That wouldn't cost a penny and would encourage successful companies to move in and conduct their business to everybody's benefit.

I don't know about you, folks, but I'd have to ask why there are no stores there now. Is it a high crime area? Is there a long history of robberies, shop-lifting and vandalism? Are there not enough buyers to keep a store going? But, instead, we'll just pour 400 MILLION DOLLARS into stores that may or may not survive. There's some job creation for ya! Shouldn't cost much more than a million or so per employee. If the government decides to run them it'll cost more, take longer and accomplish nothing but a few feel-good moments for the goons in Washington.

Another Orbler was talking about how we need government and everything liberals have done for us. We'd been going back and forth for quite some time when he said something so outrageously stupid, I was speechless. He actually said that without the Dep't of Education and Teachers Union we wouldn't be able to educate our children! Apparently he wasn't aware that both are recent creations, that the quality of education has dropped since their inception, or that those of us who went to school before the feds took over were educated very well. He also suggested that the government is responsible for collecting garbage! O.K. so some politicians qualify as garbage. Most government entitlements qualify as garbage. And certainly some activists qualify as garbage. But we're talking about the type of trash that you dump into a container and a truck collects it. Now, I don't know were he lives, but the government doesn't collect my garbage. A local company does it. The residents pay the trash removal company for the service and we call that "private enterprise".

Let's use some common sense to repair our domestic problems, shall we? Make places business-friendly, bring jobs home, and stop pretending that the government is the solution to every problem!

If the government picked up my garbage it would cost much more than the $14.00 a month I pay now. The only thing I am for outsourcing is illegal immigrants.

I don't like to press one for English, English is language of this land, and it should be the only language recognized. If companies do business here they should provide people that can speak and understand English.

It is so frustrating to try to get help with something when you can communicate to the other person in a understanding way.

I agree with you if the government would get out of the way of private industry there would be more jobs. The government can't hire us out of this recession, that the dems are turning into a depression.

Anything, left in the hands of "progressives" will go from bad to worse, Lester. It's amazing that more people (especially voters!) haven't figured it out yet. Where do they think the "almighty" government gets all the money it gives away?

Sounds like a government with too much time on it's hands and not much in the way of brains, Ruby.

my government also just paid for my masters degree (well technically it's a loan but i don't have to pay it back until i start earning over $45k). they also pay me $377 a fortnight to study AND on top of that they just deposited a further one off payment of $1150 to help with the costs of textbooks and other expenses associated with resuming or starting studying.

Sounds good from your side, Ruby. But doesn't anyone object to paying taxes so you don't have to do anything for yourself? All "gifts" from the government come from taxpayers, in case you didn't know.

I got a loan when I was in college, but I paid it back as soon as I could. My daughter paid for her own education, without government help. Some folks don't believe we should feed at the government trough, but do things for ourselves, instead. Things seem to mean more if you earn them.

well these subsidies for education are available to everyone, not just me. our tax systems recognises that at various stages in our lives we will either be paying taxes or in need of the revenue of those taxes.

i haven't always been a student, i have paid many thousands of dollars in tax and i haven't always agreed with the way my tax dollars are spent (war, private schools etc), but i do recognise that i live in a pluralist society with many different groups competing for funds for various purposes.

i guess we see things differently in australia. no one really complains about the govt subsidising education. in fact many people think that tertiary education should be completley free in order to give people from lower income backgrounds the chance they may otherwise never get.

the govt rationale for paying us to study? we will get a good education, graduate, good good jobs, contribute to the intellectual progression of our country. and pay taxes.and our taxes will be partly used to help the next generation get their education.

Running a country on a self-perpetuating tax system doesn't make much sense to me. Taxes are meant to run the country and take care of defense and other basic needs. Having a tax system that pays for everything doesn't sound good to me. There's an old saying, "A government that can give you everything can also take it away."

I prefer our Constitution (as written) where the government collects minimal taxes to pay for necessities and lets the citizenry keep enough of their own money to afford education, medical care, housing, transportation and garbage removal. The more our government takes over, the fewer rights we have and the less freedom.

i don't think you could argue that Australians have less freedom than Americans. If anything I have more freedom here since given my parents background, I would never have been able to get an education in America which would have meant a life time of dead end jobs.

You have to keep in mind, your Constiution was written 200 years ago when the world was very different. It is possible to adhere to the essence of the Constitution whilst still making concessions for the era in which we now live.

Also, some ciitizenry just don't have enough money to pay for their own education or health or garbage removal or anything else. if you grew up in a household where your father pumped gas and your mother delivered meals on wheels, do you really think you will have much hope of a better life? Who will help you? who will guide you? how will you break free of the cycle of poverty?

Your Constitution says all men are created equal, yes. but we all don't have equal opportunities. why should someone from a poor family have a lesser life than someone who just happened to be born into a wealthy family?

i wouldn't change our system of govt and taxation for yours for anything in the world. i'm glad i live in a country where we are still are compassionate enough to understand that those who have less than us, through no fault of their deserve the opportunity to excel and to contribute something to society.

As a matter of fact, Ruby, my Pappy did work in a gas station for quite some time while he finished his education. He was too poor to own a pair of shoes (no, I'm not kidding) and joined the Navy as soon as he was old enough. When he got out (after the Korean War and 30 years of service) he didn't get much in retirement pay and put himself through engineering school. We were dirt poor during those years.

Between raising me and taking care of an endless stream of relatives, we never got wealthy. I paid for my own education by wiping butts in a nursing home. I didn't ask for special concessions like Affirmative Action (which successfully moves students ahead of where they should be and engineers failure in most cases). If you can't do basic math, you don't belong in a calculus class. Period. That's not compassion, it's nothing more than insuring failure and poverty.

My family believed that hard work and wise decisions were the key to success, not feeding at a government trough and paying for someone else to sit around and do nothing while we worked.

As for the Constitution, it worked pretty well until people started changing and "updating" it. Their brilliant plans have headed us into bankruptcy, not prosperity.

i'm working pretty in my degree. govt help isn't designed to replace hard work, it's designed to facilitate it.

It's not listed in our Constitution, Ruby. We are guaranteed equal opportunity, not equal outcome. Education was a state and local matter until quite recently (and believe me, the education was MUCH better than it is now). As soon as the government took it over, it started downhill and our high school graduates often can't read, write or do basic math. Education should be a privilege and treated as such. People appreciate something more if they earn it than if it is given to them on a platter or forced on them. At least, that's how it is in my country.

Freedom and personal responsibility go hand in hand, freebies and giveaways don't have a place in a free society. At least not here.

so you think someone born into a wealthy family on Park Avenue has the same opportunity as someone from the Bronx? that's where your equal opportunity claim falls short. the fact that some are born rich automatically means we are not actually born equal.not in terms of opportunity to succeed.

some people DO have things handed to them on a platter. and it's not people like me who receive financial assistance form the government in order to get an education. do you really think mega rich people appreciate what they have? or do you think they feel superior and entitled?

Granted, Ruby, there are those who are born rich and grow up spoiled and pampered (Paris Hilton leaps to mind. Her grandfather isn't like that...) She considers herself above everything, including the law. Others with the same attitude go into politics and drive even more people crazy. They are the elite (one lives in our White House, as a matter of fact), and every society is cursed with them. Yes, even the perfect socialist Utopia, Cuba.

Equality of opportunity doesn't mean being born with precisely the same sized bank account, or talents, looks, abilities, or anything else. Abraham Lincoln was born dirt-poor and grew up to be president. Lots of famous writers, artists and performers had poverty in their early lives. The real meaning of "equal opportunity" affirms that "all men are created equal". We have no class system or caste system that determines ones future. (Here's where American liberals trot out the tired old "racist" garbage...)

Yes, we do have people born into ghettos who spend their whole lives in prison, poverty and despair. It isn't the fault of capitalism, it isn't the fault of the Constitution, either. It is the fault of those who need to keep people poor and ignorant to insure their votes. Democrats have provided every "social program" that is responsible for the destruction of the black family. Those who buy into liberal lies are doomed to keep living them. But don't just take my humble word for it, Ruby. Bill Cosby is one of our greatest actors and comedians, he goes all over the country, trying to teach black kids that they don't have to be losers to be happy... that it's possible to be both black and successful. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas also speaks to young people, encouraging them to work hard and succeed instead of falling into the welfare traps and throwing their lives away.

Yes, Ruby, we have equal opportunity and it works for those who want it. Success can be earned, but it can never be given with a welfare check.
