Keep It Under Your Hat
August 30th 2007 16:45
I seem to recall a news story about a man smuggling a monkey into the country by hiding it under his hat. Anyone else remember that? Now we have to take off our shoes and empty our pockets (and purses and carry-on luggage) in order to board a plane. The "shoe bomber" proved that even shoes can be a threat. Box cutters were the weapon of choice on 9/11, remember? So sharp objects aren't allowed anymore. Liquids were intended to be mixed and used to blow airplanes out of the sky, and are now forbidden (even though the plot was foiled). Men, women and even children are subject to being searched before getting onto their flights. It's a security measure, folks. A needed one.
Now we have turban wearing passengers complaining about having their headgear searched. They're calling it profiling. Hats are routinely removed and searched, so why shouldn't turbans and the like be searched as well? It would be inviting trouble to allow anyone to board a plane wearing or carrying anything that could bring the plane down, don't ya think? How many attacks didn't happen because the terrorists knew they couldn't get away with bringing their weapons onboard? Are we so busy bending over backwards to prove we aren't "profiling" that we're willing to risk more lives? If everyone isn't searched who could be a danger, that danger will materialize. And please, spare me the garbage about how their headgear is a religious thing. We get to hear every day about terrorists blowing up their own "holy mosques" and other "sacred" places. If their "religion" meant jack diddly to them they would have at least a little respect for it themselves. It's just a very convenient excuse to keep them a step ahead of the rest of us.
