Speaking of Role Models...

December 21st 2007 03:06
What, exactly is a role model? Think about it, folks. Who were your "heroes" and "role models" when you were young? Sports figures? Actors? Singers? Astronauts? Were they "larger than life?" Were they what you aspired to be? Were they special?

These days, the role models and heroes are a little different. Sports figures like Barry Bonds are prison bound for using steroids. Michael Vick is prison bound for horrific abuses of dogs. Brittney Spears, Paris Hilton, etc. are hardly the sort of role models we want for our kids or grandkids, either, are they?

Just when you think it can't get much worse, we have the up and coming celebrity Jamie Lynn Spears (Brittney's baby sister) and her position of adoration among the younger crowd. She's 16 years old and pregnant by who knows who? Her "mommie dearest" has already sold the ultra sounds of the baby for a big fat bundle of cash. I'm sure the birthing photos will be quite a cash crop, as well. Then we'll probably be treated to an Anna Nicole Smith circus to discover who the father might be.

Jamie Lynn Spears is just a kid, folks. I'm not saying she should kill the baby! That solves nothing. It makes the problem even worse! But she could have been taught to keep her pants on for goodness sakes! She might have had a better "role model" than her big sister. It doesn't look like their mother was much of a positive influence, either. After all, Mommie Dearest is going to make a fortune from the impending birth. Now isn't that the very image of parental devotion? Let the kid run amok and sleep around and act just like her older sister... and rake in the profits when nature takes it's course.

My heroes during childhood were great people. They did amazing things that inspired me to reach for the stars and do my best at everything. What do kids have to look up to today? Rich people who use drugs? Sports figures who do awful things? Beautiful girls who throw their lives away on the thrill of the moment?

Just a thought, folks... if you don't like the current crop of role models and heroes, do something about it. Become the hero and role model for your kids! Make the extra effort to stand for something, be there when they need you, and teach by example what it means to do the right thing. Keep your kids from turning out like Michael Vick or one of the multitude of blonde bimbos that constantly make headlines. It's not as easy as ignoring the problem, but the rewards are beyond measure when the kids turn out well!

don't forget to let them watch lots and lots of fox news, it will help them come of age (in a very literal way mind you).

You're my role model. You're a blogger. And you have an opinion who shouldn't be a role model. Which suggests you spend a lot of your time thinking about bad role models. Which might explain why you're so bitter about everything. I like bitter people. I want to grow up to be a bitter blogger like you, and tell everyone else who not to look up to as a role model. It all makes sense to me. It's so logical.

Hey S.L. There are good role models out there, and you got me to thinking about mine when I was a kid. I guess sports figures was who I look to be most like.

But the biggest role model in my life was my mom, although I lost her at a very young age her teaching, and her character shaped my life.

She taught me to be honest, to tell the truth even if it hurt me. She taught me to respect my elders, and others alike. She taught me values, and to respect myself, and treat others as I wanted to be treated.

She taught me a lot in twelve short years, and that teaching is what saved me from going the wrong way many times when I was at a cross roads in my life. She gave me the directions to make the right choices.

I want to be a role model for my children, and set a pattern of moral character that they can follow without being ashamed.

You know S.L. we as a nation have turned our kids over to Hollywood, and the video games to build and shape their moral character as they grow. When in fact we should be taking that role in their lives.

Parents may not realize that our kids look to us as examples. My dad said something to me one day a long time ago, when I was using profanity. He rebuked me, and I replied, but dad you say that. He told me don't do as I do, do as I say. That kind of example only confuses children, we as parents should be living the example we tell our kids to follow.

I agree with you S.L. we need to take a more positive role in our children's lives, and teach them that what they see on T.V. is not going to work in the real world.

S.L. my role model today is a carpenter, that took three large nails, and a cross, and built something truly wonderful for all of man kind.

Oh yes before I go, we should encourage our children to watch Bill Oreilly, and Sean Hannity on Fox. I just know that will drive the Liberals crazy.

Very well said, Lester! He is truly the best role model for everyone. These days, when kids go to school, the role models are often teachers (some of whom don't belong in a classroom at all). Outside of school the influences are even worse.

Your Mom sounds like she knew what she was doing! I hope your Dad figured things out, eventually.

You listen as well as you read: Ms Spears publicly stated that her boyfriend is the father of her child.

Lester, I doubt that you know the carpenter that you mention with such cavalierism. Do you have any thoughts approaching "original", you're a yes mam, in the most pitiful sense.

tlcorbin, you're a "NO MAN" in the most obvious sense. You have NO honor, NO manners, NO grounds for your garbage, and NO reason to keep bothering people who aren't interested in you foolish diatribes.

Hey tlcorbin, how would you know who I know? If you have a problem with me just come out and say what's on you mind don't try to hold it in.

If it makes you feel better get it out of your system. But I will still pray for you anyway. What problem could you have with my comment. Are you just looking to cause trouble, for honest people that are trying to exercise their freedom.

It's Liberals like you that give liberals a bad name, you try to make yourselves look normal. But when you face a little opposition to your beliefs, you can't in a civil way debate, but must turn mean, and hateful.

If you think that you are so superior to everyone else why don't you show some intelligence, and conduct yourself in a human manner.

Hey S.L. thanks for the comments about my mom, but my dad never did figure it out until I was married and on my own.
