Another Attack, Perhaps?
November 21st 2008 02:26
Have we been attacked again? It wasn't planes flown into buildings this time, it was a computer virus. It struck today, Nov.20th, 2008. It hit and damaged the computers at the Pentagon. Who did it? Was it some rotten little hacker that stumbled onto the right codes? Or might it have been something more serious?
My own computer started acting strange today. When I heard about the computer virus (worm, whatever) at the Pentagon, it made me think... What would we do without our computers? I would be very sad to lose my blogging capabilities, email and MySpace. My daughter makes more of her living than I do online. It would be a serious problem for her. If an enemy wanted to bring us to our proverbial knees, the computer system would be an effective way to do it. The whole idea gave me a case of the pale green queasies that still hasn't gone away.
We haven't been attacked on our homeland since 9/11/01 (but that was quite enough!) and tonight it really hit home with me that we could be attacked again, but in a slightly different way. Suppose the internet went down for good? What would we lose? Banking, communication, bill paying (online), information of every kind, systems that keep the government and the military running smoothly? We could lose it all at any minute. With one virus or worm, we could be sent back many years in time. Imagine what your life would be like if your computer suddenly went blank...?
Could it be the same terrorists who want to shove us backwards a few centuries (to the time that they call home)? Or just some miserable little creep who is hiding in his parents basement, plotting to create chaos for the fun of it? I understood today how tenuous is our connection to each other and how easily all our modern technology can vanish. It's very easy to become accustomed to the modern conveniences, folks, and assume that we'll always have them. The sudden discovery that we could literally be dumped back into the stone age is unsettling (at best) and worriesome (at worse).
Are you aware, folks, that every facet of our lives today is connected in one way or another to the computer technology that enables you to read these words? Our very infrastructure is dependent on computers. Trains, traffic lights, electric and water systems, finance (such as it is after the bailouts, etc.), medicine, shoppping, all your personal information, the IRS (nasty though it is), everything we count on and are connected to is operated by computers. Imagine them all shutting down at once. That would be the ultimate terrorist attack and leave us literally barefoot in a bed of coals.
Just a point of interest, my daughter has been monitoring the mainstream media all afternoon and saw nothing about this. I heard about it on FNC and have included the link. Here's a big, fat Bronx cheer for those of you who don't appreciate FNC and the fact that they give news as it happpens.

I thought about doing my banking online, but with much deliberation, my wife and I decided to keep it the old fashion way, face to face up close and personal.
I wish there was more computer anti-virus protection out there, I personally use McAfee, and have had many virus stopped and my computer saved. It is a dangerous world out there one must stay vigilant.
