Fame and Fortune Downfalls
January 31st 2008 13:32
Again this morning Britney Spears is in the news. This time she's entered a psychiatric treatment center at UCLA. Willingly... Heath Ledger died last week from a possible drug overdose. Do we need to mention Anna Nicole Smith or O.J. Simpson? Or any of the other celebrities who "had it all" only to lose everything (up to and including their lives)? It's really sad how so many people struggle for the fame and fortune only to be miserable once they have it. The "limelight" appears to be addictive, at least to some people. It's easy to believe your own publicity and think you're invulnerable, I guess.
Phil Spector, Robert Blake and O.J. are prime examples of the invulnerability myth. With or without convictions, their futures are not what they expected. Ted Kennedy is another excellent example of being above and beyond the law. Although he has never had to pay for anything wrong he has done, he remains the only male Kennedy of his generation who wasn't able to aspire to the White House. Of course, he's managed to be Mass. "Senator for Life" so maybe he was impervious to the forces that direct the rest of us.
There's an old sayng about a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. It seems that a lot of fame can be downright deadly (at least to those who aren't firmly rooted in faith, family, morals or something better than their own celebrity status.)
