Super Delegates and Contested Conventions
March 30th 2008 18:30
I gotta tell ya, folks... I really don't understand this business about "Super Delegates". Only the Democrats have them and they aren't accountable to anyone. They're supposed to be completely independent, right? Where did they come from and who appointed them, anyway? I understand that Hillary was in favor of it and pushing for it. What I don't understand is how they can change the rules without some sort of an ammendment. This does, after all, have a bearing on the national elections, since the Super Delegates can take the will of the voters and toss it out the proverbial window. So why is it that only the Democrats are doing it? Is it even legal? The means and methods for voting were set in the early days of this country and haven't undergone many changes since then. Certainly nothing like the brand new Super Delegates.
Howard Dean (Dem party chairman) is insisting that all Super Delegates declare themselves in July. Didn't the delegates used to declare themselves at the convention? Wasn't that why the conventions happen at all? So the delegates can select their candidate?
What happens if Barak Obama has more real delegates and Hillary manages to get all the Super Delegates? Does she then win, in spite of the will of the Dem voters? Is that how it's designed? No wonder Hillary was in favor of Super Delegates, huh?
So what happens if Obama wins the real delegates and Hillary forces him out? That would happen at the convention, right? It would be the first time such a thing has ever taken place, I think. Except for the contested convention when Ted Kennedy wanted the presidency and Jimmy Carter ultimately beat him. (We all know what happened then, don't we?)
Seriously, folks, if someone understands Democrat politics, please feel free to explain them to me. When a Republican (most notably George W. Bush) won, the Democrats hit the ceiling! They demanded endless recounts, accused the Repuclicans of dirty politics (while bragging about the slick things they had done to get votes) and stomped off as sore losers to do their best to damage the President. It's been eight years, and they're still not over it, folks! Some tantrums just keep going on, don't they?
What will happen if the Hillary devotees and Obama devotees clash at the convention? What if Hillary really does manage to steal the election from Obama? Will they create a combined ticket (as I've been predicting since day one and Hillary has suggested) to make sure they win in the national election? Or will they stomp their dainty feet and cry and drag it out to the bloody end, ensuring a McCain victory. Now, I wouldn't mind that outcome too much, except that the winner would be McCain.
Speaking of John Sidney McCain, he was made the Republican nominee by Democrats. Did you know that? It's a fact, folks. The libs/dems proudly "crossed party lines" to cast their primary votes for him so that he'd be the guy they had to face in November. McCain probably believes that those Democrats who voted for him then will continue to support him. He seems to believe that all his own "line crossing" has made him a more viable candidate. It's a nice fantasy, but nothing close to true. They thought he would be easy to defeat and wanted Hillary to have a cake walk into the Oval Office.
Then came Barak Hussein Obama. And the "Super Delegates." It could get even messier than it already is, folks. Between Obama and his unspecified "hope" and the ever shrill and haughty (and deceitful) Hillary Rodham Clinton, McCain may just wind up winning. Hope the Democrats are happy with their election creation. Nobody else will be....

I think we should just forget delegates and base everything on the popular vote. It would be so much more democratic and it would be much simpler.
