Slightly Out of Season
March 22nd 2007 14:16
I know it's almost April, but this story deserves a mention, in spite of the time of year. The Hollywood Christmas Parade is now defunct. For 75 years it was a holiday mainstay in Southern California. Originally intended to boost Christmas shopping in the (then) small town of Hollywood, it became an annual event until last year. The reasons behind the cancellation are said to be excessive costs, diminishing returns, and flagging interest. Apparently Hollywood can manage just fine without the Christmas parade to keep shoppers coming back. I didn't hear mention of any other reasons, but it crosses my mind that it's just another way to stifle Christmas. Perhaps there'll be something brand new next December. Like maybe a "Holiday Parade" that celebrates Kwanzaa, Channukha, Ramadan, Winter Solstice, New Years, etc. without mention of Christmas. Wouldn't surprise me a bit...
