Bye Bye Fidel (at last!)
February 19th 2008 13:14
Fox News Channel reported this morning that Fidel Castro is finally leaving power in Cuba. At least technically. His brother Raoul will be taking over and continuing to be the resident dictator as he has been since Fidel became ill after abdominal surgery.
As it was in Iraq, there are Cubans who can't recall anything but the dictatorship and misery they have lived with for all (or most) of their lives. Raoul won't make any major changes, as long as Fidel is alive, but what will happen then? Will he be willing to actually lead the Cuban people and allow them a real vote? Or will it be more of the same as long as he lives? He's in his seventies now...
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few years. Sooner or later, someone will come along in Cuba, who sees the failure of communism and offers the people the freedom they have awaited for so long. He (or she) will be the Cuban version of George Washington and Abe Lincoln! Unfortunately, though, I rather doubt that his name will be Raoul Castro...
