Another McCain Supporter
February 16th 2008 13:37
As I understand it, former President Bush (41) is supporting John McCain. I must confess to some disappointment, since the primaries aren't even over yet. But it isn't really a surprise... After all, he's probably thinking of party unity rather than the caliber of the candidate. At least he isn't backing Hillary (and he and Bill (the Zipper) are such good friends). It seems that McCain is collecting massive support in the expectation that he will be the candidate in Nov. Is this what they call a "self-fulfilling prophecy"? Could assuming that McCain will be the candidate and throwing support his way, be putting him forward when it might not have happened if those who are starting to back him had waited a few months? I can't help but wonder... Suppose some of them (like Gary Bauer for just one example) had backed Huckabee, who has political views more in line with their own than McCain does. Might that have changed things? Guess we'll never know now.
On Fox this morning, a couple of pundits agreed that if Hillary gets the nomination she should have Obama as her running mate. I think that should go both ways. And I believe it will. Obama could secure his victory with Hillary beside him, provided he's very, very careful. She wants the Presidency and being "one heartbeat away" could be too much temptation for her!
