101 Years Old
November 5th 2009 11:13
My Pappy would have been 101 years old today. He wouldn't understand the world we're living in or the changes we are facing these days. Pappy tended to see the world in terms of black and white... either something was wrong or it was right. It would be hard for him to deal with the shades of gray that seem to be everywhere today. I understand, because it isn't easy for me, either.
My grand daughter is a person Pappy would really like and understand. She's a Combat Engineer, stationed in Japan. Works her tail off and deals with being homesick like a good Marine. On the other side of the coin is a friend of hers. He was so "gung ho" before they left for boot camp! Now, two years later, he called my daughter to whine about being in the Marines. He has the strenuous duty of sitting at a computer in Camp Pendleton, CA. and basically playing combat games all day. Boy, that sounds rough, doesn't it? She goes all over the Orient, building roads and airports, operating heavy equipment in all kinds of weather and doesn't complain. He's sounding like Max Klinger (from MASH), coming up with one crackpot scheme after another to get out of the military.
Pappy would be delighted that the USS New York is docked in the city it was named for. He'd consider it a terrific birthday gift!
His pride in this country would be slightly tempered by shame at the way our politicians are behaving, especially ignoring our troops in Afghanistan who are defending freedom. Leadership he understood... cowardice, he didn't.
Happy birthday, Pappy...
